The Atomic Shift MNC offers friction-less "tech" climbing efficiency and alpine level downhill control thanks to the innovative design of the toe unit. Developed by Atomic/Salomon these bindings are sold as the Atomic Shift MNC and the Salomon S/Lab Shift MNC; the only difference between these bindings is the colour. Atomic wanted to create a binding that tours with the efficiency of an insert binding and offers the control and reliable relase of an alpine binding. They achieved this with a toe unit that has insert jaws and pins for in uphill mode and that transforms into a regular alpine toepiece for the ride downhill. The Atomic Shift MNC weighs just over 1.7 kg a pair (90 mm brakes) and while lighter than AT frame bindings, it's still heavier than most free rando tech bindings.
The first impression is the hybrid appearence, these look like alpine bindings where something else is going on, with the Shift Bar that straddles the toe piece. In downhill mode the bindings look like a narrow alpine binding with a long DIN adjustment housing. Pull the Shift bar up and back and the tech "wings" spread out and you're ready for uphill mode. Depress the front lever to open the wings further for step in, then pull up on the lever to lock arms securely for skinning mode.
The MNC in the name stands for "Multi-Norm Certified" and the Atomic Shift MNC is compatible with almost all alpine boots and all alpine touring boots that have pins and lugs for AT plate bindings. These bindings are compatible with ISO 5355 Alpine and ISO 9523 Touring boot soles. Boot toe height is adjustable to allow for differences between touring boots, while the Sliding Toe Pedal (aka "Anti Friction Plate") helps ensure reliable boot exit even with touring boot soles. Lightweight race boots and boots without lugs cannot be used but almost all freerando boots are compatible.
NOTE: While probably obvious, it's worth mentioning that you can only tour in these bindings if using touring boots with tech inserts.
The heel unit has two levels of heel lift for comfortable uphill travel. The freeski brakes are self retracting so stay out of the way in uphill mode. To prepare the heel unit for uphill mode pull back on the brake plate then press down on the plate to fix the ski brake in uphill mode. Atomic/Salomon produce two widths of ski crampons, 100mm and 120mm, sold separately.
It's great to see technical innovations hit the slopes and these bindings are an excellent choice for sidecountry exploration. The Atomic Shift MNC is ideal for skiers who will be skiing predominantly inbounds but want to venture out into the sidecountry without compromising safety.
