The latest generation of the binding that launched the Dynafit brand and the "insert binding" revolution, the TLT Speed Turn 2.0 is both lighter and more rigid.
Dynafit have updated the toepiece and have replaced the rather minimalist steel frame + plastic baseplate with a lighter one piece forged 7075 aluminium alloy baseplate. This has the same width but extends further forward, making a much more rigid platform for improved binding ski contact - the baseplate sits directly on the ski. Toepiece binding screws have the same 30 mm lateral spacing but the distance between the front two and the rear two holes has been increased from 27 to 39 mm. Only four screws are used in the toepiece, the central front screw is no longer needed. Thanks to the higher torsional rigidity of the baseplate, Dynafit recommend the Speed Turn 2.0 for skis up to 95 mm at the waist - 10 mm more than the earlier model. Even better, the new toepiece weighs 10 g less, shaving total binding weight down to 740 g a pair (screws and ski crampon attachment included).
The ski crampon slot in the plastic baseplate of the earlier model often broke off. The Speed Turn 2.0 now has a two piece metal and plastic crampon slot held in place by the rear two toepiece screws. While a big improvement over the earlier model, it is not quite as solid as the all metal version used on the Radical binding line. The pins linking the toepiece jaws to the baseplate are better finished and flush with the retaining metal - jaws, springs and excenter lever are otherwise unchanged.
Dynafit upgraded the heel unit of the Speed Turn a couple of years ago and have left this unchanged for the Speed Turn 2.0. Twisting the heel unit gives a choice of two heel lift heights using the top of the heel unit, then the angled higher arm. As in previous versions, a plastic spacer can be added to this to gain another 8 mm height. Lateral and vertical release range stays at 4-10 DIN, sufficient for this type of binding. The heel unit has 24 mm (+12mm / -12 mm) length adjustment so can accept up to three boot shell sizes without need to re-mount the bindings. There is no adjustment at the toepiece to centralise the boot on the ski, but for lightweight bindings it is more important to retain the optimum pivot point for the bindings on the skis when climbing. The heel unit does not have a "shock absorber" spring built into the length adjustment mechanism, as used on the heavier Radical ST & FT bindings.
Ski brakes are not available for the Speed Turn 2.0, which comes supplied with the easy-to-use Guide leash.
The TLT Speed Turn 2.0 offers several improvements over the previous model and maintains it's position as one of the best choices for skiers looking for a reliable and easy-to-use lightweight touring binding that is great value for money.
