RT 8 - ATK Binding

The RT 8 is exactly the same as the RT 10 but comes with a lower release range of 3-8 DIN. A new binding for 2020, ATK wanted to create a binding that is way ahead of anything produced by other brands, combining lightness, performance, comfort  and style. As you'd expect from ATK, the RT 8 comes packed with their latest innovations and is designed for use with skis 75-120 mm at the waist and weighing 800-1500 g per ski. The RT 8 weighs only 260 g per ski including ski brakes, has adjustable release with range 3-8 DIN and 20 mm boot length adjustment in the heel unit baseplate.

The RT 8 shares the same Monolink Technology 1.0 toe piece design as used in the SL World Cup, Trofeu and Haute Route 10 bindings. Only one of the toe piece arms has springs, and this design provides a higher clamping pressure on the boot while also saving weight. ATK had to source a new aeronautical steel alloy with an extreme elastic modulus in order to create the Monolink Technology 1.0 bindings with just two springs. The higher stiffness provides higher precision release while reducing the pressure on the locking system.

The toe piece has the same long lever that ATK developed last year that gives excellent step-in performance. This “Easy Entry System” is very positive, so knowing that you are correctly in the bindings has never been easier. When it's time to remove the bindings, the front lever design has a depression for easy pole tip placement and rapid boot step-out.

The toe piece also features ATK's new Up-Hill Hardness Variator. Used only on the RT, R12 and FR14 bindings, this multi-position indicator allows the skier to vary the locking hardness of the toe unit in walk mode. This has several advantages, allowing the bindings to compensate for boot insert wear and tear, allowing the skier to adjust locking strength as suits them (softer for lighter skiers, harder for stronger skiers) and reduces the pressure on the locking mechanism for longer life.

The RT 8 has a fully adjustable heel unit with independently adjustable lateral and vertical release with a range of 3-8 based upon ATK's excellent Cam Release System. This stabilizes the heel pins and provides the torsional stiffness ATK bindings are reknowned for. The special cam profile is pressed against the heel pins by a pre-tensioned spring: during step in, or on the event of a fall the pins are forced to go through the cam profile which provides a precise resistance to pin release depending upon the release value set on the bindings.  This mechanism provides the most stable downhill performance on the market with consistent reduction of boot torsion compared to any other tech heel unit design. It also provides the softest heel step in of any bindings. Heavier skiers should choose the RT10 which is identical apart from the higher release range of 5-10 DIN.

The RT 8 is the lightest ATK binding equipped with the Elastic Response System. The heel unit is mounted on a baseplate that can slide forwards and backwards to absorb ski flex. Unlike some other brands who no longer recommend a gap between the heel unit and boot (since the heel unit will move with ski flex), ATK still recommend adjusting the heel unit to have the 4 mm space. However the principle is the same, allowing the ski to flex without the binding and boot blocking the centre of the ski, reducing pressure on the bindings during ski compression and giving more reliable release performance.

Like the Haute Route 10, the RT 8 feature's ATK's Magneto Heel Flaps: A simple yet ingenious magnet system provides stability to the heel unit and ease of use. Lightweight and comfortable to use.

The RT 8 comes supplied with a SRA crampon slot in the toe unit baseplate, 20 mm of boot length adjustment in the heel unit and a choice of 7 ski brake widths: 75, 86, 91, 97, 102, 108 and 120 mm.
ATK bindings with brakes have a unique design for the ski brakes. While most brands combine the ski/walk mechanism with the base of the heel unit tower. This automatically reduces the rigidity of the tower block. ATK have separated the ski brake function from the heel tower, allowing them to create torsionally stiffer bindings. Ski brakes are instead activated by a button on the side of the heel base plate. Push the button in, press the ski brake plate flat and the ski brakes are locked up. Push the button to unlock for ski mode. It works very well.

A very well designed and precison engineered binding, the RT 8 offers low weight for efficent touring with the ease of use and comfort normally found in much heavier free-rando bindings.
